Last Wednesday, May 4, a second suspect in the March 21 home invasion and homicide that occurred on Golfview Street, was arraigned. William Vernell Jones, 42 years old of Pontiac, was charged with Home Invasion.
During the homicide investigation, Troy investigators discovered that Jones assisted suspect Charles Anthony Stephens with gaining entry to the apartment where the homicide occurred. Jones was an employee of Somerset Apartments.
Stephens, 53, who lived in the same apartment building with the victim, Kalpana Murali-Babu, 37, has already been bound over to Oakland County Circuit Court on a charge of felony murder. He has no bond set.
Jones was arraigned in front of Magistrate Clement Waldmann at 52-4 District Court. Bond was set at $250,000 cash/surety. Jones was turned over to the Oakland County Sherriff’s Office for lodging. Jones is scheduled to appear for a Probable Cause Conference on May 12 at 8:30 a.m. in front of Judge Maureen McGinnis of 52-4 District Court. The Preliminary Exam is scheduled for May 19 at 10 a.m.
Charges against Jones are a result of the persistence of Troy investigators and the assistance of many other agencies. The Troy Police Department wishes to extend thanks to the Oakland County Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT), including investigators from Auburn Hills Police Department, Birmingham Police Department, Bloomfield Township Police Department, Bloomfield Hills Public Safety, Clawson Police Department, Rochester Police Department, Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, and Oakland County (FBI) Gang & Violent Crimes Task Force.
