SHELBY, UTICA, MACOMB POLICE PATROL: Two School Shooting Threats at Dakota

POLICE PATROL

Shelby, Utica, Macomb Gazette – Feb. 23, 2018

DAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL TWO SHOOTING THREATS IN TWO DAYS. Last Thursday, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office responded to Dakota High School for a threat that was located on a urinal in one of the male bathrooms. Deputies were originally told the threat was written to “shoot up the school on 2-16-18,” but later learned that it was dated for “2-15- 18,” the previous day. Deputies responded and investigated finding no credible information. Over 100 males had been in and out of that bathroom over the course of the school day. Other than the writing on the urinal, nothing further was reported regarding this. While deputies were on school grounds Feb. 16, it was reported that several students overhead another male student in the Ninth Grade Center stating he had a gun with him. The student is currently being investigated and no gun has been located as of now. The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office will continue to investigate and remain on scene, however they do not believe that the two incidents are related at this time. School officials were made aware and school remained in regular session. At no point was there ever a mention of a bomb.

HOME INVASION IN HARRISON. On February 10 at approximately 4:45 p.m., Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence on Rivercrest Ave. in Harrison Township for a breaking and entering complaint. The homeowners stated that they arrived home to find multiple items missing from their home including jewelry, electronics, and a handgun. Entry was made into the home through the garage. Macomb County Sheriff’s Detectives were able to track an electronic device that had been taken to a residence in Ira Township where 27 year old Kelly Rae Smith resides. Upon further investigation it was learned that Smith had pawned jewelry and a firearm that linked to the victim’s residence. A search warrant was executed on Smith’s residence and she was taken into custody as she attempted to flee from a rear exit. A second subject was also taken into custody for several outstanding unrelated warrants. Several items were recovered from the residence. Smith was lodged at the Macomb County Jail and a two count warrant was issued by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office; one count of Home Invasion 2nd Degree (15 year felony) and one count of Receiving and Concealing $1,000.00 – $20,000.00 (5 year) felony. Smith was arraigned on 2/20/18 by the 41-B Clinton Township District Court. She was given a $20,000 bond and is due back in the 41-B Clinton Township District Court on 03/05/2018 at 8:30 a.m. for a probable cause conference.
